History of Dussehra (Vijayadashami):
This is the occasion of victory of Lord Ram over Demon king Ravana of Lanka. It is said that on this day Lord Rama killed the demon Ravana and rescued his abducted wife Sita.
Ramlila has been held during the nine days of navratri. Various actors take a part in the “Ramlila” and play their role according to Ramayana story. The Ramlila story begins with the birth of the Lord Rama and end at the stage of killing Ravana. On the tenth day huge effigies of demon Ravana, Kumbhkarna and Ravana’s son Megnath are placed in a long ground. Fireworks and crackers are also attached with these effigies to destroy these effigies fully. Actors dressed as Lord Ram, his brother Lakshman, follower Hanuman and an army of monkeys for final battle with demon Ravana. After some play and drama the character playing Rama shoots a flaming arrow to the effigy of Ravana and as the crackers catch fire, effigies starts burning and blasted. The ground is filled with sound of crackers. People feel the victory of Lord Rama and their heart filled with zeal and cheer.
In all over India, People lit the clay diyas and put those outside of their home to welcome the Lord Rama & his wife Sita. After victory on demon Ravana, the people who are playing the role of Lord Rama, Sita, lakshman and Hanuman sit in a Chariot (Rath). The victory procession is carried out in the streets of the city where people welcome them with cheer.
